ONLY ADVANCED DIVE SITES The shoal:
The reef is an extensive submerged system approximately 3kms long
by 300 metres wide and forms part of the offshore reef system that runs
along most of the Natal coast. An extension of Aliwal Reef,
approximately 9km to the south-west of it is the beautiful ‘Landers
Reef’ in 23 metres of water, which can on good days be even more
spectacular than the main reef itself. Maximum depth is 30 metres. The Produce:
Was a Norwegian tanker carrying molasses which sank after hitting the
Aliwal Shoal in August 1974. Divers
on her have the added bonus of rich and varied marine life, including 4
brindle bass.
The Nebo: The
Nebo struck Aliwal Shoal on 20 May 1884 in fair weather and went down
immediately with her cargo of railway material.
No lives were lost during the wrecking.
She is bottom-up 24 metres below the surface and is still fairly
intact. The
water temperatures range between 16 deg. ºC to 22 deg. º C with air
temperatures ranging from 25 deg. ºC to 30 deg. ºC. Visibility
averages between 2m and 30m +. PRICES INCLUDE
