The shoal:  The reef is an extensive submerged system approximately 3kms long by 300 metres wide and forms part of the offshore reef system that runs along most of the Natal coast. An extension of Aliwal Reef, approximately 9km to the south-west of it is the beautiful ‘Landers Reef’ in 23 metres of water, which can on good days be even more spectacular than the main reef itself. Maximum depth is 30 metres.

The Produce: Was a Norwegian tanker carrying molasses which sank after hitting the Aliwal Shoal in August 1974.  Divers on her have the added bonus of rich and varied marine life, including 4 brindle bass.

The Nebo:  The Nebo struck Aliwal Shoal on 20 May 1884 in fair weather and went down immediately with her cargo of railway material.  No lives were lost during the wrecking.  She is bottom-up 24 metres below the surface and is still fairly intact.
